Statement of the Non-Aligned Movement on the situation in Colombia, 25 June 1999

At the last Non-Aligned Movement Summit held in Durban South Africa, the Heads of State or Government emphasized that the taking of hostages, wherever and by whoever committed, constitute a serious obstacle to the full enjoyment of all human rights and is, under any circumstances, unjustifiable.

The Non-Aligned Movement condemns the massive kidnappings of members of civilian population of Colombia by a guerilla group, and strongly expresses that these criminal acts intended to provoke a state of terror among the civilian population of Colombia are, in any circumstance, unjustifiable, whatever the considerations or factors that my be invoked to justify them.

The Non-Aligned Movement firmly emphasizes that this act wherever and by whoever constitutes a violation and a serious obstacle to the full enjoyment of human rights in Colombia, and a breach to international humanitarian law.

The Non-Aligned Movement calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. The Movement also supports the Government of President Andres Pastrana and the people of Colombia in their efforts to bring peace among all Colombians.

Issued by the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the United Nations on behalf of the NAM, New York
